Workplace Wellness: Shopwise Wins Inaugural Mandela Tournament

KAMPALA, Uganda  Beyond the aisles and checkout counters, workplace wellness took center stage at the Mandela Sports Complex in Industrial Area as nine of the region’s top supermarket teams gathered for the inaugural Mandela Group Supreme Supermarkets Football Tournament. In a thrilling final match that showcased both athletic drive and camaraderie, Shopwise Supermarket emerged as the ultimate champions, defeating Quality Supermarket 3-1 on penalties following a hard-fought 1-1 draw in regular time.

The Road to the Title

The high-energy, one-day tournament brought employee well-being and active lifestyles to the forefront through competitive sport:

  • Shopwise’s Winning Run: Shopwise demonstrated resilience throughout the preliminary rounds—defeating Quality Supermarket 4-2, bouncing back from a 2-1 loss against Kenjoy Supermarket, and sealing a dominant 3-0 victory over S&S before clinching the trophy in the penalty shootout with goals from Paul Opiyo, Emmanuel Robai, and Obed Babigumira.
  • Quality’s Strong Showing: Quality Supermarket fought valiantly to reach the final, powered by Junior Nahwera’s brace in a 2-0 win over Kenjoy and a decisive strike from Joel Gavana in a 1-0 victory over Carrefour Supermarket. Gavana also scored Quality’s lone penalty in the final shootout.

Promoting Wellness in the Workplace

While the competition on the pitch was intense, the overarching mission of the day centered on preventative health, mental well-being, and employee vitality.

Speaking on behalf of the organizers, Mandela Group Marketing Manager Herbert Bashasha and Tournament Director Twaha Mahad expressed gratitude to the participating retail outlets not only for supporting brands like Supreme Flour, but for actively encouraging employee health.

“Our goal today is to acknowledge our collective journey, boost awareness, and foster a sense of teamwork among your employees,” Bashasha highlighted during the opening ceremony.

1. Tailored Fitness as a Personal Responsibility

Fitness expert Coach Robert Ssebugwawo, who works with the Parliament of Uganda, delivered a compelling message on physical responsibility, reminding attendees that optimal health is essential for personal and professional fulfillment:

“It’s our human duty to ensure we look after our bodies and minds so we can effectively serve others,” Ssebugwawo advised. “I humbly ask all of you to seek out a fitness and wellness plan tailored to you.”

2. Addressing the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Crisis

Underlining the urgent need for active lifestyle initiatives, New Vision Sports Editor Fred Kaweesi drew attention to critical national health statistics:

  • 33% of deaths in Uganda are attributed to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, and cancer.
  • Over 5 million Ugandans currently experience anxiety and depression.

“Prioritising our well-being is essential, yet public health often receives insufficient attention,” Kaweesi noted, emphasizing that corporate sports tournaments should become regular fixtures to combat sedentary lifestyle risks.

3. Teamwork, Mental Resilience, and Organizational Growth

Former international footballer and SC Villa CEO William Nkemba, who presided over the tournament, emphasized how physical competition translates directly into workplace collaboration and mental cohesion.

“We have to work as a team—whether it’s quality control, careful planning, or representing your store,” Nkemba stated. “Even though it seems like just fun and games, there are so many takeaways from it for our personal and professional lives.”

A Model for Corporate Health Initiatives

The inaugural Mandela Group Supreme Supermarkets Football Tournament proved that corporate sports events offer more than trophies—they build stronger communities, lower stress, and inspire workers to embrace movement. As organizations seek practical ways to boost employee health and morale, initiatives like this serve as a vital playbook for holistic wellness.
